How the ICSE Class 9 Physics paper is set

Class 9 students in 2026-27 follow the CISCE syllabus for the ICSE 2028 examination. For Class IX Physics it sets one paper of two hours carrying 80 marks, plus 20 marks of internal assessment of practical work. The written paper covers 8 units, in this order:

  1. Measurements and Experimentation
  2. Motion in One Dimension
  3. Laws of Motion
  4. Fluids
  5. Heat and Energy
  6. Light
  7. Sound
  8. Electricity and Magnetism

Our 10 chapter pages split these units into textbook-sized chapters, so you can revise one topic at a time. The other 20 marks are for practical work, marked out of 20. The syllabus lists work such as:

  • finding the least count of vernier callipers and a screw gauge and measuring with them
  • timing 20 oscillations of a simple pendulum for different lengths
  • locating the image in a plane mirror and the focal length of a concave mirror
  • plotting magnetic field lines with a compass needle
  • weighing a metal ball in air and in water with a spring balance

What changed in the ICSE 2028 Physics syllabus

CISCE published the Examination Year 2028 syllabus in January 2026. Compared with the 2027 document, for Class IX:

  • Added: motion under gravity, static and dynamic inertia, types of waves, conductors and superconductors, and numericals on the vernier callipers.
  • Removed: atmospheric pressure and the altimeter, energy flow and sources of energy, the electromagnet, and force during a collision.

The questions on every chapter page are checked against this syllabus. Read the full document: ICSE 2028 Physics syllabus (PDF, CISCE).

Why these Physics questions help

  • Numericals carry big, reliable marks once you know the formula and units cold.
  • Laws, definitions and ray/circuit diagrams repeat every year — easy marks if practised.
  • Derivations and reasoning questions reward understanding over memorisation.

Class 9 Physics exam tips

  1. For every numerical: write the formula, substitute with units, then solve.
  2. Learn each law's exact statement and its labelled diagram together.
  3. Keep a formula-and-units sheet per chapter and revise it daily.
  4. When a chapter still will not click, let the Classmate AI tutor walk you through it step by step.
